Second Grade Language Arts and Reading
In second grade, language arts is taught through a succession of 22 thematic units, such as “Volcanoes,” “Rain Forests,” and, “Maps and Globes” that integrate science and social studies concepts with reading fluency, comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.
Students are taught second grade reading comprehension skills such as making sense of text, analyzing characters, and recognizing story problems and solutions. Children are taught sentence structure, the writing process, and creative writing through developing narratives, poems, and letters throughout Time4Learning's language arts curriculum.
Second grade phonics instruction focuses on decoding longer words, applying phonics skills to spelling, mastering complex vowel and consonant combinations, isolating and blending sounds, and decoding using letter-sound recognition furthering students’ phonemic awareness through fluency and application.
The 2 nd grade writing component prompts students to write for different purposes (i.e. poems, expository, narrative), to edit for grammar and usage and to compose complete sentences with subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and punctuation, and to use graphic organizers for formatting and brainstorming ideas.
Second Grade Math
The second grade math curriculum covers broad areas including pre-algebra, numbers with operations, geometry with spatial reasoning, measurement, and probability with data analysis.
In second grade math, the most visible accomplishment for students is the mastery of operations, such as addition and subtraction through the thousands place value, highlighting the steps of “borrowing” and “regrouping.”
Second grade math expands to introduce multiplication and division with students using pictoral representations and arrays to understand that factors are part of a set. Estimation, beginning fraction concepts, and characteristics of two and three dimensional shapes are explored in depth.
Second grade math culminates in measurement and data analysis as students are expected to become fluent with understanding and differentiating between units of customary measurement and units within the Metric System (ie: inches vs. centimeters) to define length, volume, temperature, time, and weight. Using statistical approaches to collecting, organizing and representing data, students learn how to analyze information and probable events.

Second graders will: identify the steps of the life cycle, describe food chains and habitats, learn the laws of magnetism, and will be taught the relationships between the earth, moon, and objects sky.
Second grade social studies enhances student learning through focusing on real-world context such as basic human survival needs, maps and globes, historic places, cultural holidays, patriotism, and jobs. 2 nd grade students will also be exposed to social studies concepts through the language arts curriculum in chapters that integrate the themes of map skills, goods, services, consumers, and producers. In second grade, the children can use the Time4Learning online timer. This means that parents can assigned children an amount of time to follow their lessons. In second grade, we might recommend that you start with 35 minutes of lessons. This means that when they start studying, there is an online timer that counts down from 35 minutes. When the lesson timer reaches zero, the children are allowed to go to the online playground. In fact, most children will complete the lessons that they are involved in, and they only look at the timer after finishing a lesson. When they see that it’s at zero, they can go to the Online Playground. The online playground is over a 100 carefully chose games. Some are fun action games, others are learning games but unlike the lessons, they are entirely exploratory. There is also a playground timer settable by the parents to limit how long they spend in the playground. While useful to many families, the use of the timer is optional.
